Whole Steamed Fish With Good Luck Flavors

Whole Steamed Fish With Good Luck Flavors

Whole Steamed Fish With Good Luck Flavors

It’s Fiesta Friday again.  Last week, actually on Friday, I made a whole steamed fish in honor of Chinese New Year. Although it was somewhat of a challenge to navigate amongst the bones, the tactile exercise does make you feel like you’re really eating with your senses!

Worth the Work

Worth the Work

My Husband did a better job with his fish:

Here is the Recipe:

2 whole branzino fish (2-3 lbs total), gutted with head and tail on, but not boned!

1 inch ginger, peeled and grated with a microplane.  Alternatively, you can dice with a knife.

1/4 scallions, chopped

1/4 cup sliced radishes (you can use red radish or daikon radish)

4 cloves garlic, smashed with the back of a knife and chopped

1/4 cup cilantro.  You can just yank off mostly leaves with your hands.  No need to chop, you don’t want to bruise the cilantro.

2 Tbsp rice vinegar

1/2 green jalapeno, membrane and seeds removed, chopped

2 Tbsp soy sauce, Braggs Aminos or Coconut Aminos

1 Tsp fish sauce

2 Tbsp coconut oil

1/2 cup coconut milk

Score the skin on the fish.  Place some ginger, scallions inside the cavity and the rest, along with the garlic and jalapeno, on the skin.  Put fish in a steamer lined with a leaf or two of cabbage.  Steam for 10 minutes or until the fish is fully cooked.

Gently heat coconut oil and divide among two shallow bowls.  Place fish on top of milk.

Place cilantro and radish on top of fish.  Pour soy sauce (or aminos) over fish, followed by vinegar, fish sauce, then sizzling hot coconut oil.  Dig in!!!

The Thank You Face

The Thank You Face

This is a Thank You Face.

I hereby heartily thank my kindred spirit Firebonnet for nominating me for the Liebster Award.  I have enjoyed her blog from the moment I found it and it has given me lots of ideas, direction and inspiration for my own blog.  Here are the questions she asked me and my answers:

If there were a movie made of your life, who would you like to play you? (and your co-star(s))

Amy Adams or Isla Fisher; co-star Sean Penn or Sam Shephard

What would the movie be called?

Fasten your Seatbelt.  Or, alternatively “Why are you Laughing, It’s Not Funny.”

If you could have any ability you don’t have now, what would it be?

To be a songbird, to be able to sing, I mean really belt it out

If you were sent to a deserted island for a year, and all your basic needs met, what five things would you take with you?

Oh, geez.  Do people count?  My husband, my son, my parents and 1 dog?

If you could be famous for something what would it be and why?

Professional cyclist.  Because I used to be a competitive tennis player and I really liked the feeling of being good at something physical.  Plus keeps me out of my head.

If there was such a thing as time travel, when (and where) would you like to travel?

To both my parents’ childhoods to see what that was all about!

Besides your parents, who was an important person in your childhood?

Um, the characters in my books?  Okay, my first tennis coach who was killed in an automobile accident.

Are you an animal person?

If so what animal(s)?

Both (dogs and cats.  I like big big dogs and Russian Blue cats.  Black hairy pigs are pretty cute right now too.

How did you get it?

I have bird legs.  Ladybird Johnson, etc.  Sueball was from college where every respectable girl with a drinking boyfriend was nicknamed _____ ball.
